This is the forbidden 4-wheel drive I’m not allowed to own.
That’s right this Suzuki Jimny is not sold in the US.
We recently rented one to drive around Iceland for a week and absolutely fell in love with it.
It’s got a 5-speed manual transmission and can go almost anywhere while only sipping fuel.
We drove over a 1,000 miles on dirt roads, ice roads, highways, and steep mountain passes with no problems at all.
I’ve owned Jeeps and currently have a Toyota Land Cruiser, but I love how simple this thing is.
It has an old-school four-wheel drive lever and emergency brake, and a key that goes into the ignition instead of a fancy key fob.
This has a 1.5-liter four cylinder that’s not going to win any drag races, but it gets the job done.
So why can’t we buy these in the US? – the Jimny is sold in over 194 countries.
Apparently after a bunch of negative media articles about its predecessor, the Samuri, and increasing regulatory standards- Suzuki decided to pull out of the US market in 2012.
Now if we could get it in the US, it would most likely sell for around 14,500 dollars, that’s less than ½ the price of a new base Jeep Wrangler.
So, here’s the question- if Suzuki brings them to the US, would you buy one? @hausplans
