G’day Guys and Gals!
In this video I am fitting a new set of 4wd Off-road tyres and rims to my 2023 Suzuki Jimny Jb74. I have chosen to fit a set of King Offroad Wheels – Razor – Gloss Black/Machined Face – 15X7 5/139.7 P0. The tyres I have chosen to run on my Suzuki Jimny are the Maxxis Razr AT811. These are an aggressive all terrain tyre which will perform really well on road and off road.
When selecting tyres and rims for your Suzuki Jimny there are a few things to keep in mind. Depending on how much off road work you are going to do and the type of 4wding you plan on doing you can select tyres and rims that suit your needs. There are a few popular tyre sizes that people fit to the Suzuki Jimny JB74 and those are –
1. 215/75r15 fitted to the Factory rims for small increase in clearance but better tyre options for off road traction
2. 225/75r15 fitted to aftermarket rims for moderate increase in clearance and better tyre options for off road traction
3. 235/75r15 fitted to aftermarket rims for big increase in clearance and better tire choices with more off-road traction
Fitting any tyres larger then 235/75r15 will result in a large power loss and it will also raise the gearing so that low range is no longer effective. This means that you will more then likely require reduction gears to run any bigger then 235’s on the Suzuki Jimny. Larger tyres also put added stress on the wheel bearings, king pin bearings and other drive train components.
I have chosen to fit the 235/75r15 to my 2023 Suzuki Jimny because I really wanted the extra clearance under the diffs and the better choice in 4wd off road tyres. The 1.5L petrol engine still pulls the 235’s along really well. You can definitely notice the added weight and rolling resistance of the larger tyres though and any bigger tyre will drastically reduce the vehicles power and economy.
In this video I carried out a few measurements and weights before and after fitting the tyres to calculate how much clearance under the diffs I actually gained and also how much weight I was adding to the vehicle. After fitting the 235/75r15 Maxxis Razr AT811 and the king offroad razor wheels I gained 25mm extra clearance under the front and rear diffs and chassis. The factory rims and tyres weighed in at 17.5kg and my after market set weighed in at 26.2kg. So the added weight is 8.7kg per wheel and tyre. I fitted 5 new wheels and tyres to my Suzuki Jimny so I added 43.5kg to the vehicle. As the Suzuki Jimny Jb74 only has a small payload it is important to keep this in mind when modifying it. That is why I chose to use King offroad Razor Alloy wheels to keep the weight down.
With my Ironman 4×4 2 inch Lift kit the 235/75r15 Maxxis Razr At811 fitted perfectly with no trimming needed. The tyres can articulate up into the guards without any scrubbing. The Maxxis Razr At811 tyres and the king off road wheels have given the vehicle a wider stance giving it more stability. For on road work the 235/75r15 tyres have given it better cornering and stability. For off road work the wider stance means that on off camber tracks the vehicle will be a lot more stable.
I am really excited to have the Maxxis Razr AT811 tyres and the King off road razor machined faced wheels fitted to my 2023 Suzuki Jimny JB74. It is starting to look really tough and its going to go even better off road now!
Finding the perfect tyre for your 4wd can be tricky. I find that reading a lot of reviews on different brands and tyre types can help me narrow down the decision. I found that the Maxxis razr tyres had some really good reviews and I can see why! After running around on these tyres for the last week I can tell that they are really quiet and grippy tyres.
